The third film in the SARKAR (2005) franchise kicks off as a typical RGV drama where Subhash Nagre (Amitabh Bachchan) is still the boss. The fictional version of a powerful leader in Maharashtra is back in his flowing black robes, rudraksh beads around the neck and his husky, deep baritone not failing at all to give the same mesmerizing impact giving hope that the prolific RGV (Ram Gopal Varma) who changed the game of Bollywood gangster flicks and horror/thriller genre is serious this time. Subash Nagre's style of tea slurping is still the same and the aura in his dimly-lit room has maintained the tension for his visitors.
For a change the room has a portrait of Nagre's dead son Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan), and it begins from where SARKAR RAJ ended. A businessman Gandhi (Bajrangbali Singh) makes an offer to Nagre and he refuses. Trouble starts looming over Nagre's household when his grandson Cheeku aka Shivaji ( Amit Sadh) expresses his desire to stay with Sarkar and be a part of his business. Gokul (Ronit Roy), Nagre's most trusted deputy is suspicious about Cheeku's motives. While Gandhi is planning different moves to destroy SARKAR with the help of Annu (Yami Gautam) who has a score to settle and Sir (Jackie Shroff) who is controlling the mafia form Dubai. Meanwhile politician Govind Deshpande (Manoj Bajpayee) son of ex- politician Rukku Bai Devi (Rohini Hattangadi) who has lost her supremacy in the state politics is hoping a comeback by riding on her son's shoulder to the parliament.
As the characters are introduced from which Manoj Bajpayee makes a terrific impact after Amitabh Bachchan, the rest leaving Ronit Roy (though still a smiles wonder on silver screen), are bland, over the top weird and unnecessarily funny.
The premise is predictable and there are sparks of RGV proven brilliance but the terrible miscasting of Amit Sadh, Yami Gautam and Jackie Shroff spells doom for this gangster drama that is left to rely on Amitabh Bachchan's towering persona and look what unpardonable crime writers P. Jaya Kumar (story and screenplay) and Ramkumar Singh (dialogue) commit. They reduce the gravitas of the eponymous character like Sarkar played by none another then Amitabh Bachchan into a helpless spectator who utters lines like 'mein kuch nahi kar paya', 'yeh sab natak tha' leaving all the action to be done by Amit Sadh. Horribly in the second half just when you are about to bite your next samosa, this Amit Sadh starts imitating Mr. Bachchan's deep baritone as he turns gangster and is so unbearable that it turns laughable.
The villain Jackie Shroff is a wired caricature that reminds of that 2003 glamorous disaster BOOM. Yami Gautam is there but she is disappointing. Rohini Hattangadi is another disaster. It gives a feeling that RGV has arranged the ensemble cast to shoot a trailer first and given it all the power moments and later tried to connect and hold them all together with Mr. Bachchan's character to make this lazy third franchise.
And the camera of course, RGV fascination for shooting props from bizarre angle is well understood by Amol Rathod who adds to the intolerance. Thankfully, it doesn't go as berserk as RGV's DEPARTMENT that was really surreal. Here too those angles from chairs, tables and that attempt to provide the sudden oomph quotient by shooting Jackie Shroff's young girlfriend from a particular angle shows the makers self indulgence is still intact.
As and when Amitabh Bachchan comes on screen it reminds of the 2005 Subash Nagre, this deja vu is good for RGV as it still manages to give a glimmer of hope that all is not lost for RGV till yet. His comments on social media may not be taken seriously but still those who have grown up watching his cinema since SHIVA in 1989 know about his capabilities and are still waiting. The sentiments mentioned however are bad for SARKAR 3 as the movie follows the form of the original SARKAR but to diminishing effect.
